If you were hurt in northern Miami-Dade
A crash or a fall changes your week quickly. There are medical appointments to schedule, a car that may be in a shop or a total loss, shifts you cannot work, and an insurance adjuster who calls before you have had time to think. This page is for people hurt in north Miami-Dade: Aventura, Miami Gardens and nearby Opa-locka, and Miami Lakes. It explains how Florida treats car accidents, slip and falls, and truck accidents, and it uses roads, hospitals, and courthouses from this part of the county so that the information is tied to where you actually were hurt.
Attorney Ily Lopez, Florida Bar No. 1027852, runs Lopez Law. The firm is based in Coral Gables, takes Florida injury cases, and works in English and Spanish. Ily meets clients by phone, by video, or in Coral Gables. The first consultation is free, and the firm charges no fee unless we recover.
What makes the north end of the county different
North Miami-Dade is not one town. Aventura, Miami Gardens, Opa-locka, and Miami Lakes are separate municipalities with different street grids, and large parts of the area around them are unincorporated county land. What they share is a handful of high-volume roads. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) publishes yearly traffic counts, and its 2025 counts show how heavy that traffic is: Biscayne Boulevard (US-1) in Aventura carries up to about 76,500 vehicles a day, Florida's Turnpike through Miami Gardens about 95,600, and the Palmetto Expressway near Miami Lakes about 144,000. Where a crash happened tells you a lot about who was involved and what evidence may exist.
County data adds a second layer. Miami-Dade's 2024 Vision Zero Action Plan lists the county's high-injury corridors, meaning road segments with many crashes in which someone was killed or seriously injured (KSI), for the years 2018 through 2022. Three of them cross the Miami Gardens and Opa-locka area: NW 22nd Avenue, NW 37th Avenue, and Ives Dairy Road. The numbers are given in the city sections below. NBC 6, reporting county data for 2023, also ranked Miami Gardens fourth in the county for killed-or-seriously-injured crashes.
On some of these figures we have done our own counting. Miami-Dade publishes a dataset of killed-or-seriously-injured crashes, and for each city below we filtered it by its city field for crash years 2019 through 2024. We label those numbers "our own count." They show serious crashes only, not every collision, and we have not checked them against individual police reports.
Game days, events, and the Turnpike
Hard Rock Stadium is at 347 Don Shula Drive in Miami Gardens, and Florida's Turnpike toll chart lists Exit 2X as Dolphin Center, at NW 199th Street and the stadium. Event weekends can reshape the roads around it. For the 2024 Miami Grand Prix weekend, the Turnpike announced that the Exit 2X ramps would close from May 2 through May 5, 2024, and told drivers to use Exit 47 (University Drive, NW 27th Avenue, SR 817) and go south on NW 27th Avenue to NW 199th Street. We mention it because a crash on a heavy event day can involve drivers who do not know the area, detours, and crowds on foot, and each of those can matter to who is responsible.
Where serious injuries are treated
Florida's Department of Health keeps a list of verified trauma centers, last updated July 23, 2026. In Miami-Dade it names HCA Florida Aventura Hospital as a Level II trauma center, HCA Florida Kendall Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospital as Level I, and Jackson South Medical Center as Level II. HCA Florida Aventura, at 20900 Biscayne Boulevard, has run its trauma center since May 1, 2015, according to the hospital. Emergency crews decide where to take a patient based on the injuries and the situation, so we do not tell anyone which hospital is closest to them. What matters for a claim is that you go, tell the doctors about every symptom, and keep the records, because the first medical notes become the foundation of any later claim.
Where a lawsuit would be filed
Florida's venue statute, section 47.011, allows a civil action in the county where the defendant lives, where the claim arose, or where the property in dispute sits. For a crash in north Miami-Dade, that usually points to Miami-Dade County and its 11th Judicial Circuit. The circuit's courthouse list includes the North Dade Justice Center at 15555 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami 33160, and the Miami-Dade Clerk states that circuit civil cases may be filed at the Soto Justice Center downtown at 20 NW 1st Avenue or at district court locations. Which courthouse a particular case uses depends on its type and size, and filing is something we handle for you.
How Florida injury claims work
Four rules come up in almost every conversation. First, the deadline. For negligence claims that accrued on or after March 24, 2023, Florida generally gives you two years to file suit, down from four. Claims against a city, village, or county follow different notice rules, which we explain in the Miami Gardens and Opa-locka section. Our deadline guide walks through the details.
Second, fault is shared and measured. Under Fla. Stat. 768.81(6), a person found more than 50% at fault for their own harm cannot recover damages, so the way a crash is described in the first days can matter a great deal. Photos, the crash report number, witness names, and what you say to the other driver's insurer all feed into that finding.
Third, if a car crash is involved, no-fault insurance applies first. Florida's PIP rules generally require that you receive your first treatment within 14 days, and the full $10,000 in medical benefits is payable only if a physician, dentist, physician assistant, or advanced practice nurse finds an emergency medical condition; otherwise PIP medical benefits stop at $2,500. Our PIP guide explains what to do.
Fourth, reporting. Florida law requires a crash to be reported when there is an injury, a death, or apparent property damage of at least $2,000. Ask the officer for the report number before you leave the scene, and keep it.
Before you give a recorded statement to anyone's insurer, it is worth speaking with a lawyer. A call with us costs nothing, and you can reach Ily at 305-605-6739. For a first call, it helps to have the crash report number, photographs, the names of any witnesses, your insurance card and claim numbers, and a list of the doctors you have seen. If you do not have everything, call anyway; we can sort out what is missing together.
Recent crash news near this area
Local 10 and North Miami Beach Police reported on September 19, 2026 that a motorcycle and a vehicle collided near NE 170th Street and NE 6th Avenue in North Miami Beach, with several people taken to hospitals in critical condition. We wrote about it in our North Miami Beach motorcycle crash post. North Miami Beach is its own city and is not one of the cities covered below, but the post shows how quickly a roadside scene turns into a long investigation.
Aventura
Aventura sits at the northeast corner of Miami-Dade, along Biscayne Boulevard and the Broward County line.
Car accidents in Aventura
Biscayne Boulevard (US-1) is the spine of the city. FDOT counted about 56,000 vehicles a day in 2025 on the stretch that ends at the Miami-Dade and Broward line and about 76,500 on another Aventura segment, with trucks making up roughly 3% to 4% of that traffic. Driveways, signals, and turn lanes line the road, and most of the city's other traffic funnels onto it.
Our own count of Miami-Dade's public killed-or-seriously-injured crash dataset, using its city field for crash years 2019 through 2024, finds 99 such crashes in Aventura, 3 of them fatal. Of the 99, 21 involved a pedestrian, 14 a bicyclist, and 7 a motorcycle. By year the count was 17, 16, 8, 13, 16, and 29, so 2024 was the highest of the six. The most common single type was a crash involving only one vehicle (27), followed by rear-end collisions (14). These are serious crashes only. They are not every collision, and they are our tally, not an official city statistic.
If you were hurt on or near Biscayne Boulevard, think about who may have recorded it. Businesses, residential buildings, and parking garages often have cameras, and many systems record over older footage within days or weeks, so ask early. Write down the intersection, your direction of travel, and the signal phase if you remember it. If you were walking or riding a bicycle, tell us, because different insurance rules can apply to you than to a driver. Because Aventura borders Broward County, the exact location matters: a crash a few blocks north of the line may belong in a different county's court system. Our car accident page explains the next steps.
Slip and falls in Aventura
Aventura Mall, at 19501 Biscayne Boulevard, says on its website that it has more than 300 retailers. A store, a mall corridor, or a parking structure can each have a different owner or manager, so the first question after a fall is who controlled the spot where it happened. When the cause was a spill or a wet floor in a business, Fla. Stat. 768.0755 requires proof that the business knew, or should have known, about the condition, and video, cleaning logs, and incident reports are the usual evidence. For serious injuries, HCA Florida Aventura Hospital is at 20900 Biscayne Boulevard and appears on the state's Level II trauma list. Our slip and fall page covers the proof in more detail.
Truck accidents in Aventura
For a truck crash in Aventura, our truck accident page explains the rules that apply.
Miami Gardens
Miami Gardens is home to Hard Rock Stadium and is crossed by SR 7, NW 27th Avenue, and the Turnpike.
Miami Gardens and nearby Opa-locka. Opa-locka is a separate city, but it shares two of the county's high-injury corridors with Miami Gardens: the Vision Zero Action Plan's NW 22nd Avenue and NW 37th Avenue corridors, listed below, both include Opa-locka. FDOT's 2025 counts show trucks at 6.1% of the roughly 20,500 vehicles a day on Opa-locka Boulevard (SR 916), and at 9.9% of about 48,500 a day on NW 27th Avenue at NW 135th Street, close to 4,800 trucks daily. Everything on this page applies to a crash or fall in Opa-locka too. If the fall happened on property owned by a city, a county, or the state, Fla. Stat. 768.28 generally requires written notice to the agency within three years and a lawsuit within four, with recovery capped at $200,000 per person and $300,000 per incident, so call early.
Car accidents in Miami Gardens
NBC 6, reporting Miami-Dade Vision Zero data, ranked Miami Gardens fourth in the county for killed-or-seriously-injured crashes in 2023, with 93 crashes involving 117 people. Our own count of the county's public dataset, using its city field, finds 496 KSI crashes in Miami Gardens for 2019 through 2024, of which 119 were fatal and 90 involved a pedestrian; the same filter returns 92 crashes for 2023, close to NBC 6's 93. The most common types were pedestrian (82), rear-end (77), and right-angle (57). Treat these as serious-crash counts, not totals.
Several county high-injury corridors run through the city. The 2024 Vision Zero Action Plan, covering 2018 through 2022, lists NW 22nd Avenue from NW 7th Street to NW 183rd Street (11.13 miles, 69 KSI crashes, 22 fatal), NW 37th Avenue from Ali Baba Avenue to the Broward line (5.05 miles, 26 KSI crashes, 4 fatal), and Ives Dairy Road from NW 37th Avenue to NE 26th Avenue (7.21 miles, 27 KSI crashes, 5 fatal). These corridors also pass through Opa-locka, Miami, and unincorporated areas.
FDOT's 2025 counts add context: roughly 55,500 to 61,500 vehicles a day on SR 7 (US-441), 46,000 on NW 27th Avenue, and between 17,100 and 27,500 on NW 199th Street depending on the segment. With that much traffic on roads crossed by many side streets, drivers and pedestrians share the same intersections, and pedestrian crashes are the single most common type in our count. If you were walking when you were hit, the way fault is argued differs from a driver's case. Our car accident page and pedestrian page cover what to do after a crash.
Slip and falls in Miami Gardens
Hard Rock Stadium, at 347 Don Shula Drive, Miami Gardens 33056, hosts games and large events. A fall on stairs, ramps, or concourses at a large venue can involve several parties, such as the venue operator, an event contractor, or a maintenance company, so identify exactly where you fell and keep your ticket or receipt. Photographs of the surface, the lighting, and any warning signs matter, and so do the names of staff you spoke with. Event-day crowds mean witnesses are plentiful at the moment and hard to find later, so get names and phone numbers while you are still there. For a fall caused by a spill or wet floor, Fla. Stat. 768.0755 applies. See our slip and fall page.
Truck accidents in Miami Gardens
Florida's Turnpike runs through Miami Gardens, and FDOT's 2025 count there is about 95,600 vehicles a day with trucks at 9.7%, roughly 9,300 trucks daily. Of the 496 KSI crashes in our count, 28 were flagged in the county data as involving a commercial vehicle. That is a small share, but the vehicles are heavier and the evidence is more involved: the driver, the carrier, and sometimes a broker or maintenance company. Ask the responding officer which agency wrote the report, and write down the carrier name and USDOT number on the cab or trailer if you can see them. See our truck accident page.
Miami Lakes
Miami Lakes lies along the Palmetto Expressway and I-75 in the northwest part of the county.
Car accidents in Miami Lakes
FDOT's 2025 counts put the Palmetto Expressway there at about 144,000 vehicles a day, with Miami Lakes Drive at 27,000, NW 154th Street at 24,000, and NW 67th Avenue (Ludlam Road) at 39,000. Our own count of the county's public KSI dataset for 2019 through 2024 finds 47 killed-or-seriously-injured crashes in Miami Lakes, 9 of them fatal; 20 were off-road crashes and 7 were rear-end. If your crash was on a freeway ramp or a town street, say so, because it affects which agency investigated and where the report is filed. The Town of Miami Lakes, whose charter took effect on December 5, 2000, is a separate government from the county. See our car accident page.
Slip and falls in Miami Lakes
If you fell at a shopping center, in an office building, or in a community run by a homeowners association, start by identifying who controls that walkway or floor. Fla. Stat. 768.0755 applies to spills in businesses, and an association may be responsible for common areas. Take photographs before the area is cleaned or repaired, and ask for the incident report. Ask the property manager in writing to preserve security video, because many systems record over it, and note whether it had rained. We found no verified Miami Lakes premises figure, so this section is brief. Our slip and fall page explains the proof in more detail.
Truck accidents in Miami Lakes
FDOT counted trucks at about 7.8% of Palmetto Expressway traffic there in 2025, roughly 11,200 a day, and at 11.1%, about 18,400 a day, on I-75 at its southern end. Our own count finds 3 of the 47 serious crashes flagged as involving a commercial vehicle. With that much freight on nearby highways, a truck crash often involves a driver, a carrier, and insurance policies with commercial limits. Federal rules require carriers to keep records of a driver's duty status for six months, which is why an early preservation request matters. Write down the company name and USDOT number on the cab or trailer, and photograph the vehicles before they move. See our truck accident page.
North Miami-Dade injury questions
I was hurt near Hard Rock Stadium on a game day. Is that different?
The legal rules are the same, but the evidence can be spread across several parties: a driver, a venue, an event contractor, and police. Note the time, location, and gate or lot, keep your ticket, and ask for the crash report number. Call us and we can talk through what records may exist.
Which hospital treats serious crash injuries in north Miami-Dade?
Florida's Department of Health trauma list (updated July 23, 2026) names HCA Florida Aventura (Level II), HCA Florida Kendall and Jackson Memorial (Level I), and Jackson South (Level II) in Miami-Dade. Emergency crews choose the destination, so we do not say which is closest for you. Whatever hospital you reach, keep the records.
I was hit by a truck on the Turnpike or I-95. What should I do?
Get medical care, ask the responding officer which agency wrote the report, and photograph the vehicle, any company name, and the scene. Do not give a recorded statement to a trucking insurer before you understand your options. See our truck accident page.
How long do I have to file a lawsuit after a north Miami-Dade accident?
For negligence claims that accrued on or after March 24, 2023, Florida generally allows two years. Claims against a government body have notice rules and older claims may differ. See our deadline guide.
Will I have to pay to talk with you?
No. The consultation is free, and the firm charges no fee unless we recover.
