On September 5, 2026, Local 10 and WSVN reported a two-vehicle crash overnight in Sunrise near University Drive and Northwest 25th Court. Sunrise police put the time at about 1:53 a.m.
News coverage showed badly damaged vehicles and debris in the roadway, including into a nearby Shell station. Authorities said at least one vehicle struck a utility pole. Florida Power & Light reported as many as 33,700 customers without electricity after the crash. FPL said power was restored about 90 minutes later.
Three people were taken to the hospital as trauma alerts. Sunrise police later said one adult man was pronounced deceased. Identities were not released. The intersection was closed while police investigated and crews cleared the scene, then reopened. Sunrise police said the crash remains under investigation.
When a crash takes down a power pole
A hard impact into a utility pole can do more than wreck the cars in the intersection. Poles carry high-voltage lines. When a pole is hit, the force can snap wood or hardware, drop lines, and cut power to nearby homes and businesses — sometimes for thousands of customers at once. Debris can spread into parking lots and gas-station driveways. Night crashes on major Broward corridors like University Drive (State Road 817) also leave investigators sorting vehicle damage, the pole, and how the cars came together. Local 10 and WSVN said the investigation is ongoing.
