Early Sunday, October 4, 2026, a pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle on North Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach, according to the Hallandale Beach Police Department. NBC 6 and Local 10 reported that officers responded at about 1:40 a.m. to the 100 block of North Federal Highway after reports of a crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle.

Police said the vehicle was traveling southbound when it struck a pedestrian who was crossing the roadway outside of a designated crosswalk. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital, where they died. Their identity was not released. According to police, the driver stayed at the scene and was cooperating with investigators, and NBC 6 reported that no arrests had been made. The roadway was closed for a period while investigators worked the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.

Mid-block crossings on a multi-lane road at night

North Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach is a busy, multi-lane corridor, and a crossing away from a marked crosswalk in the early-morning hours gives both the pedestrian and an approaching driver very little time. At night, headlights, streetlights, and storefront glare can make a person in the travel lanes harder to pick out until the last moment. Florida law asks pedestrians crossing outside a crosswalk to yield to vehicles, and it also requires drivers to use due care to avoid striking a pedestrian, so where someone crossed is one fact among several, not the whole answer. Investigators typically look at the point of impact, the damage pattern on the vehicle, lighting at that block, and available video to reconstruct what each person could see — questions police said were still under investigation after the October 4, 2026 crash.

Thoughts are with everyone affected by this crash.
