Local 10 night highway still of emergency lights on I-195 in Miami Beach after a bus-pedestrian crash (no victim faces).
Local 10.

On Thursday evening, October 1, 2026, NBC 6 reported that a pedestrian was killed after being struck by a bus while walking on Interstate 195 in Miami Beach. Local 10 also covered the crash. According to NBC 6, the incident happened around 7:20 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-195 near Alton Road.

Florida Highway Patrol told NBC 6 that the pedestrian entered the roadway and was struck by an oncoming bus. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. NBC 6 reported that FHP temporarily closed eastbound I-195 during a preliminary investigation and diverted traffic to I-95. No additional details about the pedestrian or the circumstances were released. The investigation remains ongoing.

Pedestrians and buses on an interstate like I-195

A pedestrian on an interstate has almost no protection against a bus moving in highway traffic. A bus carries far more mass, and evening conditions near Alton Road can limit how soon a driver sees someone who has entered the roadway. Walking on I-195 is not like crossing a surface street: speed, limited shoulders, and continuous lanes leave little room to recover once a person is in the travel path. Florida Highway Patrol investigates how a pedestrian entered the roadway, what scene evidence shows about rest positions and lighting, and what can be verified — questions NBC 6 said were still open after the October 1, 2026 crash.

Thoughts are with everyone affected by this crash.
