On September 12, 2026, Local 10 and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue reported a serious crash in the 4000 block of West Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach around 8:30 p.m. Crews found an overturned vehicle and multiple critically injured patients. Incident commanders declared a Level 1 Mass Casualty Incident. Coconut Creek Fire Rescue also assisted.

According to Broward Sheriff's Office traffic investigators cited by Local 10 and CBS12, the driver of a 2017 Nissan Sentra was traveling eastbound in the left-turn lane on Hillsboro Boulevard and began a U-turn to head west. At the same time, 18-year-old Maxwell Patel of Parkland was riding westbound on a 2022 Suzuki GSX-R570 motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the passenger side of the Nissan, and the car flipped. Patel was pronounced deceased at the scene. A juvenile girl who was a passenger in the Nissan was taken to Broward Health Medical Center and later pronounced deceased. The Nissan's adult female driver and a juvenile boy were taken to Broward Health North; the boy was later airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center. Three other passengers in the Nissan — two adults and another juvenile — were also taken to Broward Health Medical Center. BSO said the two surviving juveniles were listed in critical condition. The crash remains under investigation.

When a U-turn crosses a motorcycle's path

A U-turn on a divided arterial puts a car across lanes that through traffic is still using. A motorcycle rider has far less mass and almost no vehicle body between them and the impact. A side strike can overturn a passenger car and throw the rider in the same moment. Nighttime lighting, left-turn lanes, and speed differentials make those crossings harder to judge in a split second. Local 10 and CBS12 reported that BSO traffic investigators are still working the Deerfield Beach scene facts.
