Early Tuesday, October 6, 2026, a man riding a scooter died after being struck by a driver who left the scene in Overtown, according to Miami police. Investigators said the crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. near Northwest 7th Avenue and Northwest 7th Street, and officers were called to the area at about 4 a.m. after reports of a man down in the roadway, NBC 6, CBS Miami, and Local 10 reported.

Miami Fire Rescue took the man to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, and he later died. Police said their preliminary investigation showed he had been riding a scooter when a vehicle hit him and then fled. On October 8, Miami police asked the public for help finding a dark-colored Toyota Corolla, model years 2020 through 2025, that was last seen heading toward Little Havana and is expected to have extensive windshield damage and possibly damage to the front passenger side, NBC 6, CBS Miami, and Local 10 reported. Northwest 7th Avenue was closed between Sixth and Eighth streets while investigators worked the scene, and the investigation is continuing.

When a driver leaves after hitting a scooter rider

Scooter riders sit low, travel with little around them, and can be hard to see before dawn, so a collision with a car often causes serious injuries even at city speeds. Florida law requires any driver involved in a crash that injures or kills someone to stop, stay at the scene, and give aid and information. Leaving is a felony, and the penalties are heaviest when someone dies. When a driver flees, police usually rebuild the crash from what was left behind: debris and vehicle parts in the road, damage on the scooter, nearby business and traffic cameras, and tips from people who saw a damaged car afterward. On October 6, Miami police said detectives were reviewing cameras in the area and talking to witnesses, and by October 8 police had released images of the vehicle they are looking for. The October 6, 2026 Overtown crash remains under investigation. Anyone who recognizes the vehicle or has information is asked to call Miami police at 305-579-6111, or to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers anonymously at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
