An 18-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale died early Sunday, November 1, 2026, after a car struck the electric bicycle he was riding on as a passenger in Boca Raton, according to the Boca Raton Police Services Department.
The crash happened shortly before 2 a.m. on West Palmetto Park Road between Interstate 95 and Military Trail, near Sugar Sand Park. Police said a 2025 Corvette traveling east on Palmetto Park Road struck the e-bike, which was carrying two riders. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The e-bike's operator was taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition. The driver of the car was not injured.
Lanes of Palmetto Park Road near I-95, along with the southbound I-95 ramp to westbound Palmetto Park Road, were closed during the response, local reports said. Police have not said which direction the e-bike was traveling or what led to the crash. The department's Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating, and no charges have been announced.
E-bikes on busy roads at night
Under Florida law, e-bikes are generally treated like bicycles, which means riders can use the road and drivers are expected to share it, including leaving at least three feet when passing. On a wide, fast-moving road like Palmetto Park Road near an I-95 interchange, cars and e-bikes can be traveling at very different speeds, and at night a rider can be hard to see until the last moment. Traffic homicide investigators typically look at the speed of each vehicle, lighting and visibility, where on the roadway the impact happened, the e-bike's equipment, and any video or witness accounts. People on an e-bike have little protection in a collision with a car. Responsibility is not assumed from who was hurt; it depends on what the investigation finds.
Thoughts are with the family and friends of the young man who died, and with the rider who was hurt.
